This section provides access to live training opportunities for care team members looking to advance their knowledge in managing patients with substance use disorder (SUD) and chronic pain.
Pain & Substance Use Disorder Treatment: Part 1 – Biomedical and Psychosocial Aspects of Pain
During Part 1 of this two-part live virtual training course, the participant will gain skills and knowledge in the most current evidence-based approaches of pain management including an overview of pain mechanisms, biopsychosocial interventions, and the use of cannabinoids.

Pain & Substance Use Disorder Treatment: Part 2 – Importance of Screening for SUD and Management of Legacy Patients
During Part 2 of the two-part live virtual training course, the participant will be introduced to the the importance of regular screening for substance and alcohol use to detect risk, the importance of early intervention when risk is identified, and when taking over pain management from other providers, the importance of effective and empathic communication including how to have crucial conversations.

ASAM Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder Course
MI-CCSI has partnered with the ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) to offer their 8-hour on-line learning course at a discounted rate. The ASAM Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder course provides eight hours of evidence-based education utilizing interactive, case-based learning that examines the approaches for identification, assessment, diagnosing, and managing the treatment of patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). This course is comprised of five self-paced sessions and full completion of this course meets the DEA requirement for 8 hours of education on substance use disorders.

Behavioral Health Considerations for Treatment of Chronic Pain
During this 4-part learning learning series, the participant will explore the key behavioral health considerations when managing patients with chronic pain. Utilizing case studies, these short learning vignettes will explore strategies for addressing unhelpful beliefs and behaviors in patients with chronic pain, discuss key communication strategies, utilizing Behavioral Activation and Mindfulness in the treatment of chronic pain.

Caring for Legacy Patients with Chronic Pain
This learning activity will utilize case studies to review treatment options and medical management considerations for chronic pain legacy patients (a patient whose care is taken over by a physician after treatment was initiated by another physician). This activity will include risk management for legacy prescriptions, (prescribing that continued beyond the usual length of time and are not discontinued after the usual recommended period) affiliated with chronic pain management.

Diagnosing & Treating Chronic Pain Based on the Underlying Mechanisms
During this two part learning series, the participant will review the underlying mechanisms of chronic pain including nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic pain, utilize a body map to determine the patient’s mechanism(s) to develop a treatment plan for pain management.

Nociplastic Pain and Chronic Overlapping Pain Conditions
During this learning activity, the participant will explore nociplastic pain and chronic overlapping pain conditions, focusing on pain perception, central neural inflammation, and the role of the central nervous system (CNS). It will also review diagnostic criteria, various management strategies, and combining pharmacological and self-management techniques to improve patient outcomes.

SBIRT Learning Series
This learning series is comprised of seven recorded vignettes and two optional practical skills application simulation activities that provide the key components to successfully implement SBIRT (Screening, Brief Interventions, and Referral to Treatment) a model to screen and coordinate treatment for alcohol (AUD) and substance use disorders (SUD).
