Gun Violence: A Public Health Crisis and our Role as Physicians – Recorded (On Demand) Training
Support strategies for practice team members in promoting patient safety and preventing firearm-injuries.
During this one-hour, on-line learning activity, the participant will learn practical tools and strategies to support patient safety, promote secure firearm practices, and navigate key clinical and legal tools related to firearm‑injury prevention.
At the conclusion of this training course the participant will be able to:
- Part 1: Understand the scope of the firearm violence epidemic in the United States and in MI and identify risk factors for types of gun violence
- Part 2: Learn about the MI Secure Storage Law and how to incorporate secure storage counseling into your preventive visits.
- Part 3: Learn how to perform C.A.L.M. (counseling on access to lethal means) as a life-saving tool and discuss temporary transfer of firearms.
- Part 4: Learn in what circumstances an E.R.P.O. (Extreme Risk Protection Order) is recommended and how to file.
Successful completion includes:
- Access the MI-CCSI Learning Management System.
- Create a New User Profile (if a new learner to the system).
- Participate in the learning activity.
- Complete the course evaluation to obtain continuing education credits.

Audience
The course is intended for providers, nurses, advanced practice providers, and other care team members who are seeking to expand their knowledge and skills.
Faculty
Christine Schloesser, MDDr. Schloesser is a Family Medicine Physician with Trinity Health, where she provides comprehensive primary care and contributes to initiatives focused on public health and community safety. She serves on the Trinity Health Gun Violence Prevention Workgroup, helping guide system-level strategies aimed at reducing firearm-related injuries. Dr. Schloesser is a board member of Physicians for the Prevention of Gun Violence, working collaboratively with colleagues to advance education, advocacy, and evidence‑based approaches to firearm injury prevention. As a BeSMART‑trained presenter, she regularly provides community education on secure firearm storage and child safety. Her clinical expertise also informs her work on Governor Whitmer’s Gun Violence Prevention Taskforce, where she serves on the Clinical and Secure Storage Subcommittees. In these roles, Dr. Schloesser contributes to the development of practical, data‑driven recommendations to improve firearm safety and reduce preventable harm throughout Michigan.
