Engaging with Patients About Cannabis Use – Recorded (On Demand) Training
Cannabis Use
During this one-hour learning activity, the participant will gain an understanding of how cannabis products affect the body and interact with various medical conditions and symptoms and working with patients experiencing adverse affects of use.
At the conclusion of this training course the participant will be able to:
- To understand the evidence base for how cannabis products affect the body and interact various medical conditions and symptoms.
- To identify strategies to work compassionately with patients who are using cannabis for non-medical and medical purposes that may be experiencing negative effects.
Successful completion includes:
- Access the MI-CCSI Learning Management System.
- Create a New User Profile (if a new learner to the system).
- Participate in the learning activity.
- Complete the course evaluation to obtain continuing education credits.

Audience
The course is intended for providers, nurses, advanced practice providers, and other care team members who are seeking to expand their knowledge and skills.
Faculty
Kevin Boehnke, PhDKevin Boehnke is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and the Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center. Kevin received his doctorate from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences in 2017. He is also a yoga instructor. His research focuses on therapeutic applications of cannabis and psychedelics and addressing the public health harms caused by their criminalization.

The AAFP has reviewed Engaging with patients about cannabis use – Enduring and deemed it acceptable for up to 1.00 Enduring Materials, Self-Study AAFP Prescribed credit(s). Term of Approval is from 08/29/2025 to 08/28/2026. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™ toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.
