Control is the Goal

During this one-hour learning activity, the participant will explore asthma diagnosis, treatment options, and the care manager’s role in supporting people with asthma.

At the conclusion of this training course the participant will be able to:

  1. Explain the methods used to diagnose asthma and how severity is classified to inform appropriate treatment strategies.
  2. Outline the pharmacological management of asthma, including an overview of medication classes and the various delivery devices available.
  3. Discuss the significance and key components of an asthma action plan, emphasizing patient education on symptom monitoring, medication adjustments, and when to seek urgent medical care.

Successful completion includes:

  • Access the MI-CCSI Learning Management System.
  • Create a New User Profile (if a new learner to the system).
  • Participate in the learning activity.
  • Complete the course evaluation to obtain continuing education credits.

The course is intended for providers, nurses, advanced practice providers, and other care team members who are seeking to expand their knowledge and skills.

Faculty

Karen Meyerson, MSN, APRN, NP-C, AE-C

Karen recently retired as Director of Commercial Care Management for Priority Health, a large regional health plan based in Michigan. She graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Master of Science degree in Nursing from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Karen is also a Family Nurse Practitioner, as well as a Certified Asthma Educator.

For 20 years, she led an asthma coalition, which was believed to be the first grass-roots asthma coalition in the nation to receive third-party payer reimbursement for its home-based asthma case management services.  She has also worked as a Nurse Practitioner in a private allergy practice, specializing in asthma and allergies.

Karen has lectured extensively on asthma for both professional and lay audiences. She has published numerous journal articles and served as a national speaker and consultant/mentor for asthma programs and coalitions nationwide, seeking to replicate her coalition’s reimbursed case management model.

At Priority Health, Karen led the Commercial Care Management team, consisting of nurses and social workers providing holistic care management for members with chronic or complex health conditions, including asthma and COPD. Nationally, Karen is a past-Chair of the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB) and presented at Congressional Briefings on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, on asthma-related issues.  Karen has a passion for helping individuals optimally manage their asthma and improve their quality of life, and she currently serves as an asthma consultant for various organizations.

Providers & Nurses

The AAFP has reviewed Asthma – Control is the Goal and deemed it acceptable for up to 1.00 Enduring Materials, Self-Study AAFP Prescribed credit(s). Term of Approval is from 10/21/2025 to 10/20/2026. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™ toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.

Nursing Credit: Nurses can use the AAFP CME toward their State of Michigan licensure renewal requirements. Information on this can be found on the LARA website and through the Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) at Michigan Nursing Licensure Renewal Info
