Chronic Pain Series: Spinal Care Learning Activity

Intended audience

This course is designed to provide an introduction to managing patients with chronic spinal issues. It is intended for care managers in the primary care or ambulatory care settings. This recorded material is available for nursing and social work enduring continuing education credits.


  1. Review the epidemiology involving low back pain in the US
  2. Review the purpose of an interdisciplinary spine rehabilitation program
  3. Discuss the typical treatment plan for low back pain and escalation of treatment strategies based on patient symptoms
  4. Discuss patient challenges when inflicted with chronic low back pain

Kelly Armstrong, MD
Dr. Armstrong Dr. Kelly Armstrong is a full-time physiatrist and specializes in treating patients with complex medical illnesses, cancer and related conditions, musculoskeletal injuries, women’s health, and sports-related injuries at Mary Free Bed Spine Center.
James Hartlein
Jim is the Director of the Spine & Pain Center for Mary Free Bed. He is a physical therapist who has been practicing for the last 25 years specializing in spinal rehabilitation. He has a Master’s degree from the University of Michigan and a Doctorate from Boston University.
