Session 4: Asthma Action Plans, Healthcare Literacy & Case Studies
This course is designed to outline the development and implementation of action plans using evidence based guidelines for optimal asthma management, address healthcare literacy, and provide examples of case studies.
It is intended for care managers and other care team members in the primary care or ambulatory care settings. This learning activity is available for nursing and social work enduring continuing education credits.
- Define the goal of asthma education: Help patients take control of their asthma
- Assist in identifying key patient educational messages to empower patients in self-management
- Problem-solving educational approaches in complex patients
- Overview of healthcare literacy definitions and considerations when working with the diagnosis of asthma
- Increased ability to develop a customized asthma action plan that is based on evidence-based practice guidelines
- Increased competency in self-assessing own ability to recognize and develop a plan for asthma management
- Provide a practical application via case study examples and review

Karen Meyerson, MSN, APRN, NP-C, AE-C
Karen is the Director, Commercial Care Management at Priority Health. She is the former manager of the Asthma Network of West Michigan (ANWM). She graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Master of Science in Nursing degree from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is also a board-certified Nurse Practitioner in private practice, specializing in asthma and allergies. In addition, Karen has served on the Michigan Department of Community Health-sponsored Michigan Asthma Advisory Committee, the Michigan Pediatric Asthma Mortality Review Panel, and the Michigan Consortium of Asthma Coalitions Steering Team. Nationally, Karen was elected to the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB), where she is an Emeritus Member, and has presented at Congressional Briefings on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, on asthma-related issues.

An application for continuing education activity has been submitted to the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative. Course approval is pending.
Registered or certified medical assistants can submit copies of their agendas and certificates of completion to their certification entity to obtain continuing education credits.
